Happy New Year!

Well, it's a new year! Time for a fresh start and new beginnings. I worked all the way through 2011, even on New Year's Eve, and I'm just now getting a chance to rest and reflect on the past year and the new one that's just begun.

The new year brings change, and change brings so many different emotions...excitement, a little anxiety, maybe a little apprehension. Even still, I really look forward to leaving behind old doors that have closed and to seeing new doors open.

I hope you take this time to make a fresh start in your life! Dream a new dream or reignite your fire for an existing one. Reach for the stars, and take another step towards your destiny!

Inspiration: Vintage Edition

So... I am completely infatuated with almost all things "old school." I really love the style, the flavor, the polished look and feel, and the integrity of decades past. I ran across some of this footage at an event this past July and fell in love with it all over again. Shout out to my friend Andrea Cody at Dance Houston for sharing this with me!

Here are a few of my thoughts on this video. First of all, can't you just feel all of the life and energy they're giving us in this choreography?! Some things just can't be taught, and whatever that is, they definitely got it! They just look so effortless, which is one true mark of an amazing performer. I mean look how Fayard Nicholas sweats out his hair by the end of the "Stormy Weather" piece, which is something I can relate to...lol. All jokes aside, I was inspired beyond words by this, so much so that I'm trying to figure out a way to resurrect it with a modern day flare.

I'm sure you can tell how uber excited I am about these clips. I'll be on the hunt for more inspiring moments from the past so stay tuned!

"INSPIRED" - STEVE JOBS

I'm sure we've all been touched by the life and saddened by the death of visionary Steve Jobs. Amidst all of the reports about his life, his company, and the legacy he leaves behind, I thought I'd share this quote from his Stanford commencement speech. It completely sums up everything that I believe in, and it has left me completely inspired.

Really pay attention to the message in this quote. Take his lead, and do whatever it takes to follow your dreams. Let's all lead INSPIRED and INSPIRING lives!

I'M A MONSTER!

So....this past weekend Monsters of Hip-Hop, the touring dance convention, actually made a stop in Houston. For the past 8 or so years that Monsters has been around, I think this may have been their first visit to my hometown.

Of course I went...on Sunday only though, and it was definitely worth every penny. I took 5 very intense classes from Chonique Sneed, Laura Edwards, Luam, Marty, and Rhapsody, each with a very different style, but they all brought it!

What I appreciated most about the classes was the actual training that took place in those classes. They didn't just throw some tough choreography at us quickly and expect us to get it. They did that too, but they also took the time to correct us, clean the movement, and teach the dancers what they look for when they hire professionals. While I know all of this information simply because I already work professionally as a dancer, and I hire dancers for different projects of my own, I still appreciated the thought and the care.

I've always believed that as artists it's our responsibility to deposit something more into the lives of others outside of the art...in my case it's dance. So, I always make it a point to leave my dancers having planted seeds of encouragement, or discipline, or skill, or greatness!

I also loved learning Rhapsody's choreo for "Dance for You", one of Beyonce's songs on the deluxe edition of her new album. That was actually my favorite. I treated it as if I was in an actual rehearsal to work with Ms. B herself. I can't wait to see the video!

So, overall the classes were great. I'm glad I was able to go. Needless to say, I was completely sore for the next day or two, to the point where it hurt to breathe. That just goes to show you how much I was going in!!

LOTTO

I just finished choreographing my first main stage production at The Ensemble Theatre. The show is a comedy about a family who obviously hits the lotto but learns that they were rich even before they won tons of money. It's a hilarious production that teaches us to value the important things in life; the things that are lasting.

While the choreography only consisted of some staging and simple movements for the rapping son and entire cast as some points, I really enjoyed this project. My past experience with other rap performances and plays really helped me to put my best foot forward on this one. It was also an interesting change of pace to work with all actors...not one dancer in the cast.

I loved it, and can't wait until I get the opportunity to work on another play! Who knows...maybe it'll be Broadway. Anything's possible!

Lift Me??!!

Last Saturday night, The Ensemble Theatre held their annual gala at the Hilton Americas in Downtown Houston, and I was called in to perform during one of the evening's tributes. Stephanie Mills was one of the honorees, and a board member performed "Home" as a tribute to her.

Since "Home" is such a moving and powerful song, my partner, Bryant, and I decided to take our performance to the next level by incorporating lifts into the choreography. That may not seem like a big deal to some people, but I've never done lifts before. Yes, I've been the base in some complicated cheer stunts, but I've never been the one being lifted. However, I chose to put those feelings aside and push myself.

Having an experienced partner definitely helped. He was so supportive and patient, and the performance turned out better than I could have imagined. Everyone, even the hotel staff working the gala, loved the piece! Everything -the singer, the band, the lights, and of course, the dancers- came together perfectly to make it an incredible performance!

I wish I had pictures of the actual lifts to share, but I don't. This pic of me and Bryant will have to do. Until next time!

DREAM BIG...and GO FOR IT!

A 70's Reunion

Well, we did it again. We worked with over 80 kids between the ages of 6 and 17 to put on another great production. This session's young performers put on "Humpty Dumpty is Missing" (6-9), and "A 70's Reunion" (10-17).

Both age groups did a great job on their shows, but I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the 70's Reunion. The kids sang and danced to some classic hits like Stevie Wonder's I Wish, YMCA, Family Reunion by the O'jays, We are Family, Kung Fu Fighting, Do the Hustle, Give Up The Funk, Carwash, Dancing Machine, and more. Not only that, the staff took a stroll down memory lane and jumped in on the soul train line during the end of the show!

The kids also re-enacted scenes from Good Times, The Jeffersons, What's Happening, and The Wiz. Even though most of the material was over their heads, the show was an absolute crowd pleaser! The audience loved it, and it was definitely a lot of fun to both choreograph and watch. And I was working that afro puff, if I don't say so myself! ;-)

Miss Texas Deaf Pageant

Last weekend I had the opportunity to perform for the Texas Deaf Pageant. A friend of mine, who is an interpreter, choreographed the event and asked me to join her team of dancers. While it was a great reason to reconnect with friends, performing at this event was definitely an eye opening experience as well.

The pageant was very much like your traditional pageant, but the difference being that the contestants were hearing impaired. It was interesting to see how everyone communicated with one another and especially to observe how the contestants learned and practiced choreography without being able to hear the music. They were able to feel the vibrations of the beat in the music to stay in sync with one another, but even that was a bit of a challenge for a few of them.

Needless to say, I take my hat to these ladies. They were great! Beautiful, talented, and driven women who, in a way, introduced me to a different side of life. I wish them the best in all of their future endeavors.

All That Jazz!

The usual suspects performed together yet again for the Dance Houston gala at the House of Dereon Media Center on July 14. The theme of the night was "All that Jazz," and there was a group of b-boy/house performers, a flirty girly number that included yours truly, and a great musical theater type piece to, of course, All that Jazz. The gala served as a fundraiser for new Dance Houston programs involving dance and nutrition.

Even with the great crowd, great organization, great cause, great food and drinks, and great performances, my favorite part of the night hands down had to be the video montage of some classics like Stormy Weather and a Cabin in the Sky. The dance scenes in these movies are almost to die for! Completely amazing...absolutely inspiring...but that's another story for another day.

Falling in Love with the Theater

So...

I'm now into my second session of being the choreographer for the Ensemble Theatre's Young Performers Program. We completed our first session last month, and the current session ends at the end of this month. While this is not my first summer working with this program (it's actually my 3rd), for some reason, I have just recently begun to fall in love with musical theater, and working with the program has just confirmed it.

I have dance training in a range of styles and tons of experience in each of those styles as well. But just over the past six months or so, I've become more and more interested in the musical theater style of dance.

Concerning the summer program I'm currently working with, I'm choreographing the show that the kids put on at the end of each session. Last session they did "Sundiata: The Lion Queen" which called for african, jazz, and a little bit of hip-hop. This session, we're doing a fun 70's style show that will be filled with jazz and different styles of hip-hop from that era.

It really is refreshing to know that even after all of my years of experience, my passion continues to evolve. I'm so looking forward to continuing my work with this program and in the theater world in general. Stay tuned for my feedback on the next show!

Majic 102 Summer Concert Series

Last Friday night I performed with Tamar Davis at Majic 102's summer concert series at Jones Plaza, and of course, I had a great time! It was packed, the crowd was great, and we had an amazing performance. The Houston heat and humidity didn't stop us. We let the sun do it's thing, and then we got the night started off right!

The entire performance team ( the other dancer, choreographer, Tamar, and the band) was great. Working with them was just as it's supposed to be...professional, top notch, and fulfilling. I look forward to more nights like that!

Kids and the Arts

Summer is almost here, which means the school year is ending, and summer programs are starting. I have the pleasure of working with a little bit of everyone because I choreograph for schools, theaters, and my church.

My church has a performance company for elementary aged kids, and they put on productions for other kids their age at church. About a week or two ago, we put on a huge production that was a take on "Alice in Wonderland." They called it "An Adventure in Wonderland", and with the help of a few of our teens, the kids put on an amazing show of acting and dancing.

I just love working with these kids...well all kids really. I'm able to deposit something more than just the steps into their lives. I'm able to teach performance skills, leadership skills, and just be an overall role model for them. Needless to say, the production was a huge success. We have a great team of leaders who all take time out of their schedules to help the performance company, and the kids definitely did their part too!

Now I'm all warmed up and ready for my next kids production with the Ensemble Theatre's Young Performers Program. Stay tuned for the outcome and pics from those shows.

Lemonade Day 2011 at the House of Dereon

Through my company, Arts Life Entertainment, I, along with two of my dancer friends, performed at the 2011 Lemonade Day event held at the House of Dereon Media Center. Lemonade Day is a nationwide event that promotes entrepreneurship in youth. There were tons of Lemonade stands all over the city of Houston, and the nation for that matter!

We provided the entertainment for the guests and tiny business owners who braved the heat all Sunday afternoon. It was such a fun and worthy event whose guests included Matthew and Tina Knowles, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, Lemonade Day Founder Michael Holthouse, Miss Houston Teen, Majic 102.1, and Hot 95.7.

It felt amazing to be apart of an event like this because everyone knows that I love to encourage young people, actually all people, to follow their hearts and their dreams. It was definitely right up my alley!

Mao's Last Dancer

So...I attended the screening of Mao's Last Dancer a week or so ago. Apparently, it was released last summer, but I had never heard of the movie until I received an invite to the screening. All I can say is that I LOVED IT!

The movie tells the life story of Li Cunxin, who was taken from his family in a small Chinese village at a young age to study ballet in Bejing. Years later, he visited Houston on cultural exchange and fell in love with an American dancer. Soon after, he defected (against his will), and went on to become a principal dancer in the Houston Ballet and eventually the Australian Ballet as well.

This was such an awesome story of passion, dedication, drive, and even politics. It was even more exciting to know that my hometown was the setting of such a remarkable story. The screening was followed by an interesting Q&A session with Li Cunxin himself and his immigration attorney Charles Foster.

I'm so glad I was extended an invitation to that event, and more importantly, I'm SO glad I decided to attend. It definitely left me feeling entertained and inspired!

TSU Honors Awards 2011

I just wrapped on a project with the Ensemble Theatre about two weeks ago. It was the Texas Southern University Honors Awards held at the Wortham Center in downtown Houston. TSU honored Kirk Whalum and Thomas Maloncon, among others.

The show was a full on production. There were singers, actors, dancers (including yours truly), a spoken word artist, a performance by both Kirk, Kyle, and Kenneth Whalum and Thomas Maloncon, and a performance by the entire TSU band, Ocean of Soul. The "Portrait of Art" themed event was absolutely phenomenal!

I also performed in the 2009 awards show, and this year's event was so much more involved. Although our 30 hour week rehearsals were exhausting, I still had a great time working this project. I met a lot of artists who I now call friends, and I definitely learned a lot as well. Coming from a world of mainly urban dance, it was very refreshing to dive head first into musical theater type work. The style has definitely caught my attention, and I wouldn't be surprised if I begin to see a slight shift in the focus of my professional work from hip-hop to theater. Who knows where it could lead....the possibilities are endless.

Age Old Dance Riddle

2011 has gotten off to a great start for me, and I hope the same is true for you! In addition to teaching a variety of classes all over the city of Houston, I'm still able to work as a performer in different shows. I just performed in the Halloween and Party Expo at the GRB convention center last weekend. This was my second time working this event, and I had just as much fun as I did last year!

I was able to work with old friends and make new ones as well. During one of our conversations, a new friend made the following statement: "There's an old saying that goes: Q: How do you make a dancer complain? A: Give her a job."

I had never heard this riddle before, but what a powerful one it is. While it is a generalization, and there are exceptions to every rule, it seems to be pretty sad, but true. How many times have you overheard complaints on the job or maybe even let a few complaints fall from your own lips?

I've discussed this before, and since I've run into this real life scenario yet again, I thought I should raise the issue again as well. I challenge every dancer (or any other professional for that matter) to be faithful in your work. If you're doing all that you can to get your dream job, then let's not ruin in by complaining about it once we've gotten it. Let's all just do our parts, remain professional, and focus on the fact that we're fortunate enough to be able to live our dreams!

Dance Audition Etiquette

So...there was an audition in Houston this week for dancers and models for an expo, and because auditions for well paying professional jobs in Houston are few and far between, there was a good number of dancers who showed up.

Now, it was definitely no LA or New York. Our 50+ people at the audition pale in comparison to the hundreds of dancers who regularly turn out to the the many auditions in LA or New York. But that wasn't the only difference I noticed at the Houston audition. While there were a good number of talented dancers at the audition, most of them lacked a certain level of professionalism that I think is necessary to be successful.

Some people just didn't have the right presentation. Some were in sweats, no make up, class wear, etc. Others didn't have the right materials...no headshot, no resume, or both. I was initially surprised by this observation, but on second thought, I think the lack of professionalism is understandable. These dancers may have thought that they were prepared...maybe they're just uninformed. After all, we all have to start somewhere.

With that in mind, I thought I'd make a quick list of tips for dance audition etiquette for those who may just be starting out.

1. Arrive a few minutes early to allow for parking, check in, and stretching.

2. Always bring a few copies of your current headshot and resume. Make sure your headshot shows your current look (hairstyle, weight, etc.).

3. Wear attire that is reflective of the job for which you're auditioning. For example, dress in 50's gear for a 50's style project, sexy body conscious clothes for a sexy-girlie project, etc.

4. Look your best. Do hair and make up according to what works best for you.

5. Ladies, always bring a set of heels in the event that the job calls for you to dance in them. If this is the case, the choreographer will want to see you audition in heels.

6. Be respectful of other dancers. Be mindful of any spacing issues while learning the choreography. Before leaving, thank the choreographer, assistants, producers, or any other executives who may be present at the audition.

7. Do your best! Put on extra layers of confidence and work that dance floor!

Keep this list handy, and refer to it as often as necessary. I hope it helps any aspiring dancers on their journey to greatness, and I hope to see a studio full of pros at the next audition!

Dare to DREAM

Hey friends! 2011 has gotten off to a great start for me, and I hope the same is true for you. The new year always brings thoughts of resolutions and goals with it. While making resolutions is not really my thing, I have continued to dwell on one thought: KEEP PRESSING TOWARD MY DREAMS!

We all know how important it is to dream, and it's even more important to act, persevere, and remain dedicated to making those dreams come true. So, my message to you today is one of encouragement. I know that I can see all of my dreams become my reality, and I believe the same is true for everyone.

In my company, Arts Life Entertainment, our slogan is BELIEVE. BE TAUGHT. BEGIN. These three simple actions can get you started on your way to living your dreams. All you have to do is BELIEVE that your dreams are possible, BE TAUGHT the skills necessary and process to achieving your dreams, and BEGIN to take steps towards your destiny.

There's definitely no easy road to leading a life of purpose and destiny, but the journey is well worth it. Repeat the three step process as often as it takes until you reach your stars. Never ever give up! All things are possible to those who believe!

Let's all DREAM big and LIVE even bigger in 2011!

An Attitude of Gratitude

So here's another quote that I've fallen in love with recently:

" Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation." ~ Brian Tracy

I don't have much to say about this quote except "I LOVE IT!" It's so profound, so humbling, and so true.

I've just recently returned to the U.S. after spending 3 months in Shanghai, China, and since I've been back, I've been in such a state of gratitude. I'm appreciative of the experience I just had, of the preparation it's given me for bigger projects, and of the growth I've had while in China and since I've been back.

I challenge you to take a look at your life and take notice of all of the things for which you have to be grateful. Always keep those things in mind, and never lose your attitude of gratitude!

Now 'N Later

Think about this statement made by Oprah Winfrey:

“Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.”

I come across a lot of quotes on a regular basis, and if I find one that catches my attention, I make sure I share it with others. I usually just share them on Facebook or Twitter, but this particular quote struck such a chord with me, that I just HAD to share my thoughts on it.

Many professional artists are freelancers. There isn't always a long term consistent project. So, when one project is done, there is always the question of "what's next?" With that being said, I wonder how many artists (or any working professional for that matter) actually apply this principle to their lives.

I've definitely come to appreciate and learn to practice this principle in my own life. I understand that whatever project I'm working on, whether it's on a main stage or a sidewalk, could ultimately affect my next project. While working the current project, I could make an important contact, get a referral for something else, or just be seen by the right people. So, if I'm not putting my best foot forward now, I could miss out on any one of those opportunities.

I've worked on more than one project in the past where the dancers seemed to complain about everything. Not only did they complain, but some were late, some were difficult to work with, and some even failed to master the choreography. In short...they booked a job, something that I'm sure plenty of other artists would love to do, and then they had a problem with working! I just can't seem to wrap my head around this.

Now, I'm no saint. I've had my issue or two with a job, but at the end of the day, I've always been appreciative of the opportunity and professional on the job. I think the rationale that some of those dancers had concerning their work ethic and conduct is that once they book the larger jobs, their dream jobs, THEN they'll be on their best behavior, or at least they won't have any of the issues they feel they have with their current jobs. My response to that rationale is this: who's to say you'll ever book the big jobs if you can't get your act together on the smaller ones? If you don't know how to act on this job, how will you know how to act on the next one? Not only that, word travels quickly, and if you're known for being a "trouble maker" on the job, you probably won't even be hired for the big jobs.

So, just do yourself a favor (and everyone you're working with too). Take the drama out of the job, and just live. Do what you love to do, and do it with excellence and professionalism. Do you're best now so you'll be well prepared for your later.

THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF DANCE

So...my work has taken me all the way to Shanghai, China! I've been in Shanghai for over a month, and I feel like my world has done a complete 180.

China is so different from America. I've had to adjust to so many things like the food, the drivers, the lack of diversity, the cultural differences, and of course, the language. Although I've begun to learn various Chinese words and phrases, communicating has been like an ongoing game of Charades or Guesstures!

The interesting thing is that the language barrier doesn't seem to apply to dance. I've taught classes in both Shenzhen and Shanghai, and I was initially concerned about how the language barrier would affect the class or the students' ability to pick up the choreography. Since I don't really teach choreography using counts, I was also concerned about the students being able to follow the musicality of the movement as well.

Fortunately, classes have gone on without a hitch! While we aren't always able to verbally engage in a conversation, we meet in the movement. No questions are asked. The music is in English. I speak English and use the few Chinese words I know, and everything is fine...better than fine...it's great! When the music starts, no Charades are necessary because we all speak the language of DANCE.

ARE WE BEING HEARD??

This is no news flash, but I love to research and talk about all things dance. I like to know as much as possible about my craft. I research choreographers, dancers, dance movies, dance productions...pretty much anything. Recently, I've been doing a lot of research on different careers in dance (more on that later), and it's fascinating how many careers related to dance there are that I've never heard or thought of.

Specifically, I've been intrigued with dance writers or critics, which are people who report on different things within the dance industry, mainly dance performances. As usual, I think these writers mainly focus on modern/ballet/contemporary performances. Even the few dance magazines there are focus mainly on contemporary styles of dance. Dance Spirit does include articles and other info on the genre of hip-hop, but this magazine caters to teens. So, it leaves me wondering, who reports on the professional urban dance scene for adults?

There are magazines out there for everyone. There are hair magazines, fitness magazines, fashion magazines, etc. Take a magazine like Elle for example. Through Elle, fashionistas everywhere can keep up with current fashion trends, find affordable places to shop, read interviews from fashion designers, and so much more. Again I ask, do we have such a platform for aspiring or professional urban dancers beyond their teen years?

We have groups like World of Dance that are uniting urban dance and fashion, but what about the side of urban dance that includes dancers and choreographers who are working in feature films, music videos, major tours, etc? Is anyone reporting on that? Where can I find a consistent "guide" on those things? Am I too specific of a demographic for such a publication to exist?

Additionally, if there are no professional urban dance publications, then there really aren't any urban dance writers, are there? Where does the urban dance enthusiast who chooses a career in journalism find employment? If there isn't an outlet for the reader or the writer, then are we even being heard?

What do you think? Do you think there should be publications made specifically for professional urban adult dancers? If there were, would you even purchase or read it? What can we do as a dance community to make sure urban artists (dancers, writers, photographers, etc) have the same opportunities, recognition, and resources as those within the ballet, modern, and contemporary genres?

LAURA EDWARDS COMING TO HOUSTON FOR MASTER CLASS

Houston has seen some great workshops and summer intensives this summer season. Sound Box, So Real, and other Houston area studios have invited some of the industries most notable dancers to help Houston dancers get to the next level.

Here’s the next one up! Laura Edwards whose credits include Britney Spears Circus World Tour, Step Up I & II, Alvin & the Chipmunks, Hairspray, ABDC Season I : Fysh ‘n Chicks, and more will be in town this Saturday July 24th to teach a master class. Laura’s influence as one of the industry’s top dancers is evident in her numerous YouTube hits, her following at Monster’s conventions, etc., and there’s definitely a buzz within the Houston dance community about her visit.

Personally, I can’t wait to take Laura’s class. I love to see dancers from different companies and studios come together for the sake of the art. I’m sure Saturday’s class will be full of energy and excitement as Houston dancers rally together to make Laura’s stop in our city unforgettable!

MOVING INTO HIP-HOP

As a choreographer, I meet dancers from all walks of life. I see ballet dancers, urban dancers, latin dancers, modern dancers, etc. I’ve noticed that many dancers aren’t comfortable moving in and out of different styles of dance, which shocks me a bit.

As a dancer, I try to learn as many styles as I possibly can. I like to keep all of my options open, but most importantly, I just love to dance. Over the past year or so, I’ve become especially interested in learning different latin styles of dance. A very close friend and fellow professional dancer, Kay Munoz, teaches me latin styles of dance , and in return, I teach her urban styles.

I decided to pick her brain to find out how she felt about transitioning from latin styles to urban styles. Here’s what she had to say.

Q: What exactly is your dance background?

A: I’ve been dancing since I was 5. I started out learning Venezuelan folklorico and ballet, and then moved into ice skating. When I was 13, my sister sang in a latin band, and I started social dancing (salsa, bachata, merengue, etc) at her shows. From that point on, I’ve been in various companies training and performing those dances.

Q: What styles of dance have you been learning recently?

A: I’ve been learning hip-hop and a little bit of stepping.

Q: How was the transition from latin styles to urban styles of dance?

A: Hard! I’ve always had the desire to learn other styles of dance because I wanted to grow as a dancer. So, I was very interested in learning something new. However, I did find it difficult learning the isolations, working with different counts and the musicality of hip-hop.

Q: How has learning urban styles helped your career as a professional dancer?

A: Learning hip-hop has really opened me up. I have more performance opportunities, and I’m a more comfortable and confident dancer.

Q: Any words of wisdom that you’d like to leave other dancers looking to transition into urban dance styles?

A: I would tell them that education is key. Keep growing as a person and as a dancer. Always be humble, and don’t forget where you came from. Continue to perfect the styles you already know while you learn a new style.

MOVING INTO HIP-HOP

WHAT IF WHO YOU ARE DOESN’T SUPPORT YOU??

While working at a young performers program in Houston, I had a chance to talk about dance and careers with the program's dance instructor, Ms. Goodin. We were discussing different dance careers, colleges, etc, and she made a very profound statement by saying that with many people, "who you are doesn't support you."

I've been completely fixed on that statement since she said it, partially because there is so much truth in it. This could be true for any profession, but it especially holds true for many artists. Musicians, dancers, painters, poets, actors...any artist. Once they realize what drives them, what ignites their fire, what they're sincerely great at, that very thing may not pay enough to support their lifestyle. And actually, it's this very reason that many parents and/or friends try to discourage their loved ones from following their dreams.

Knowing this, many artists take on part-time or even full-time "regular" jobs to make ends meet while pursuing their passion on the side. But does this then demote their passion to just a hobby? Are you not as serious about your dream if you take on any other job? Or are you naive and unrealistic to think that you can achieve the life you want, dream, money, and all??

My thoughts are...to each his own. Everyone must choose and follow their own paths in life, and we all have to do what works best for us. My suggestion to fellow full time artists would be to create ways to bring the work to you. Produce events featuring your work. Produce your own shows. Form and market your own band. Just don't sit around and wait for someone to "discover" you. Get out there and reveal yourself!

Whatever you decide to do, make sure you remain true to yourself. Stay grounded and focused on your goals, and do what it takes to achieve them. If you perservere throughout the times when "who you are doesn't support you", you'll look up one day and realize that it's not only supporting you, but it's also catapulting you to your destiny.

WHERE ARE ALL THE REAL PERFORMERS??

So, I’ve been gone for a while working on various projects, mainly with dance companies, school productions, etc. I’ve also been to LA recently for work. As I teach or rehearse with dancers, I always try to leave something more than just “steps” with them. I try to mold dancers into performers. I always tell dancers that they should connect with the movement or choreography on another level, and that an audience won’t remember what steps they’ve just performed, but they’ll remember how they felt when then watched them being performed. So, my advice is always to FEEL not THINK.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve noticed that more and more of our young dancers are just that….dancers. A lot of them lack any performance skills. They seem to be pretty good at technique or picking up on choreography, but something’s missing from the package. To defend these young dancers, I do remember when I was their age, and I had trouble with “performing.” I could execute choreography very well, but I lacked any other emotion besides a huge smile. It wasn’t until I became older and more comfortable in my skin that I began to understand the principles of being a true performer.

So, my question is: how can we change this? How can dance teachers and educators help dancers become performers? I do agree that some people just have it and others don't...but only to a certain extent. What can we do as a community to make sure as many dancers as possible have that soemthing special...that "IT" factor?

I'd love to hear opinions from LA dancers as well as Houston dancers. The floor is open...I'm all ears.

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!

Houston…we definitely have a problem! I just worked on a project as a dancer for a pretty big gala in Houston. For the gala, peformers were brought in from Vegas and San Francisco, and six to eight females were chosen from Houston. So, here’s the 411.

PROBLEM:

The choreographer said that out of the past 15 years that the event has taken place, they’ve only used local (Houston) talent for the last two years. He went on to say that the client felt like Houston dancers weren’t professional enough…that they were unreliable, did not have good work ethic, and maybe didn’t have enough talent as well!

MY THOUGHTS:

I’m so disappointed! On the outside looking in, I can see how the client could make that generalization. So many of our best dancers move to LA, New York, or other cities to work professionally, and the ones that are left may have left a bad impression on some dance employers. Even as an insider, I can understand how employers can feel this way. I’ve worked with (or at least tried to) some dancers in Houston, and I got the same result. Not all of them, but some do leave calls unreturned, arrive late -if at all-, don’t do their part to fully master the given choreography, etc. So, I can only imagine how employers may feel if they’ve experienced the same things.

SOLUTION:

I repeat, it’s not the entire professional dance community in Houston that acts unprofessionally, and I’m positive that there are dancers in other cities that do the same things. Unfortunately, those that have messed up on a job, have given the rest of us a bad rep. We need to do a better job of being what the client or employer needs us to be. If you’re only in it to pass the time, learn a new hobby, or have some fun, then please stay in that lane. Don’t go out for professional jobs without giving it 100%.

We need to step our game up Houston! We’re only as strong as our weakest link. So, let’s each do our part to keep the work that we have here, and to bring more of it in the future. If we all start exceeding the employer’s expectations, then word will spread, and we’ll have more opportunities to work on the bigger projects more often. Who knows? They may even want to fly us out to other cities for their projects instead of using the talent in that city. The possibilities are endless if could just get our act together as a unit.

Check out these wise words that Chuck Maldonado left for us in this video. In addition to taking his advice, let’s make sure that we are considerate enough to return phone calls, arrive on time, master the choreography, and are respectful to one another on the job.

Houston Dancers Pack Up and Head West

Tis' the season to move to LA...or so it seems. A number of dancers have left the hot and humid city of Houston for the mountains, palms trees, and beautiful beaches of Los Angeles.

What is it exactly that LA has that Houston doesn't?? Well, besides the gorgeous weather, try easy access to the industry's top choreographers, dance agencies, auditions, and oh yeah, JOBS! There are way more opportunities for dancers to work professionally in LA than there are in Houston. However, speaking from experience, I know that there are just as many challenges as there are possibilities.

So, what else must a hopeful bright-eyed dancer contend with once they’ve made the decision to move to LA? Well, here’s the nitty gritty. Moving from Houston to Los Scandalous (as some call it) is quite the culture shock. The poeple in Houston are much more approachable and friendly, and the cost of living is significantly higher in LA. Newcomers will have to adjust to much higher gas prices, rent prices, etc. Parking is crazy. Traffic is even crazier. And let’s not forget that there are a million other dancers who’ve moved to LA to follow the same dream. So, the competition is fierce.

I am by no means trying to be a dream killer. I moved to LA in 2004 for the same reason and stayed until the summer of 2008. The things I’ve just mentioned aren’t coming from a negative place. They’re coming from a very real place. Becoming a successful professional dancer is actually a very achievable dream, but much like any other career, it takes a lot of dedication, hard work, resilience, and skill.

As for me, I love both Houston and LA. I love the slower lifestyle and the support system that I have in Houston, and I love the weather and the opportunities that are in LA. I’ll continue to travel between the two, enjoying the best of both worlds.

To the dancers who’ve just made the leap of faith into La La Land, I wish you much success. You definitely have the talent to make it. I hope you learn the game quickly and efficiently, stay true to who you are, and represent Houston well as you take the journey towards making your dreams come true!

Houston Crews Get Ready for WOD Dallas

Houston crews are getting ready to pack up and head north! That's right...World of Dance Dallas is this weekend, and Houston crews have been hard at work for months!

We have Marvelous Motion, Illovation, Ghost Crew, and Home Grown representing Houston. Marvelous Motion took 3rd place at WOD Pomona last year while Ghost Crew made it to the Season 5 Regionals of ABDC. Illovation performs and competes all over, and Home Grown is the premiere group right out of So Real Dance Studio in Houston. So, the urban dance community is in for a real treat...courtesy of H-Town!

I performed with Marvelous Motion in Pomona last year, and the entire World of Dance event was definitely unforgettable. The energy was great, the performances were AMAZING, and there was plenty of cool gear and great food to go around. As WOD prepares to hit Texas for the first time, I’m sure it’ll be just as great. We’re known for doing it big in Texas….so, why should this be any different!

Good luck to all the crews who are preparing for WOD this weekend. I know you’ll represent and make us proud. I can’t wait to see the performances and hear the results!

Chuck Maldonado Taught Houston Dancers Choreo from Season 5 Finale of ABDC

As you all know, Chuck Maldonado made a stop in Houston to teach a master class. I took the class, and he definitely gave us our money’s worth. Not only did he teach us bangin’ choreo to one of Usher’s songs, but he also taught us the step choreo that the final two teams performed on the season 5 finale of ABDC.

Taking that master class was exactly what I needed. I was challenged. The energy was great, and I left feeling inspired about my life as a dancer. Dancers were even able to ask questions about working in the industry, about Chuck’s dance background, and more.

Chuck left these words of wisdom with us (not verbatim): to keep God first, stay humble and grounded, to train, and to make sure we have an agent and great headshots. You can tell that these are words that he lives by because he has such a warm and welcoming presence. He didn’t just throw some choreo at us. He genuinely took the time to “train” us, and I really appreciated that.

If you’re in LA, definitely take advantage of the fact that these industry choreographers teach classes regularly. I’m thankful that Houston dancers are able to train under these choreographers, and I look forward to whoever decides to visit H-town next!

CHUCK MALDONADO Back in Houston!

A few weeks ago, a great line up of choreographers, including Chuck Maldonado, came to Houston to teach a full day of classes. I think the workshop had a pretty good turnout, but some Houston dancers were not able to make it.

Fortunately, Chuck will be back in town this coming weekend to teach a master class. Chuck is a well known choreographer who’s work can be seen in Stomp the Yard, ABDC, SYTYCD, Dancing with Stars, and so much more. He’s even worked with Fergie and Neyo too.

Houston dancers are really looking forward to getting another chance to take class from Chuck. We’ve taken his class at Monsters of Hip-Hop in Dallas, but it’s cool to be able to take his class in our own city. Hopefully the word will get out about how “bomb” Houston dancers are, and we’ll get more top choreographers to come down just to teach us.

If you’re in Houston this weekend, make some time to come take the class with us. It’s on Saturday April 10th at 3pm at the Houston Dance Factory, 5711 Hillcroft St, Ste D-3.

What’s really tight is that we get to see his choreography on the season 5 finale of ABDC this week, and then we’ll get to take class from him this weekend! I didn’t get a chance to take his class a few weeks ago, but I’ll be there on Saturday for sure!

Houston Heats Up with Hip Hop Workout

Things are said to be bigger and better in Texas, and that’s definitely a fact. We eat “good” and are big on state pride and sports. Well recently, those aren’t the only things that we’ve been “big” on.

The buzz is that a new form of dancerize has tickled the fancies of many people. People all over Houston - as well as other cities, I’m sure – are loving hip-hop as a form of exercise. They’re enjoying the upbeat music, learning cool moves that could translate into some great social dancing, and of course, burning those calories with movements that are different and interesting.

Many urban dancers think of hip-hop as their passion, their stress releaser, or their form of self-expression, and I think it’s cool to see this dance style infiltrate the lives of so many “non-dancers.” Whether they’re exercising to lose weight, to stay fit, or to simply do something fun for themselves, these finess enthusiasts are opting for a little street style over the treadmill.

I absolutely love the fact that hip-hop dance is becoming a friend to more and more people. It’s such an awesome style of dance that can be interpreted and expressed in so many different ways. It’s such a welcoming style that calls you to take on the traits of the choreographer while allowing you to add your own “swag” to it as well. Sounds like a winner to me!

CELEBRITY CHOREOGRAPHERS HIT H-TOWN FOR WORKSHOP

DARRIN HENSON, CRAZY LEGS , LAURIEANN GIBSON, MR. FREEZE, CHUCK MALDONADO, and HUGO HUIZAR will be in Houston this weekend for an all day workshop. Students will get a double dose of each choreographer as they pair up to teach two classes each! Scheduled classes include video street style, up rock and poppin, breaking, and even stepping.

HOUSTON IS ON THE MAP!

Houstonians are here, and we want the world to know it! Houston is well known for its oil and gas industry, but our urban dance scene is quickly on the rise too.

I know you watch ABDC….and since you do, I know you’ve seen the teams who’ve come out to represent Houston. We’ve seen So Real Cru, Ghost Crew, Xtreme Motion, and Distorted X. We’ve also seen dancers like Phillip Chbeeb on So You Think You Can Dance.

So…what does that tell us? That tells us that Houstonian’s have lots of talent and that America should pay attention! It’s only a matter of time before aspiring professional dancers will seek to move to Houston for work in addition to LA, New York, and Atlanta.

We have some great studios like Sound Box Studios, plenty of dance crews, a variety of master classes, and some exciting showcases too. There are even auditions for some great projects from time to time.

So…Houston is definitely here to stay. We’ve got skillz! Look us up on MTV, YouTube, Fox, and wherever else you can find us, and you’ll see!

Get Your Sneaks

It looks like a new trend has begun in H-town. Our girl Tiff has been adding her own style of bling to our favorite sneaks!

I’ve seen people customize their clothes, shoes, cell phones, and bags, but I’ve never seen it done like this. The placement of the stones are so detailed and stylish that you can’t help but drool!

I have a pair myself, and the attention I get when I wear them is almost overwhelming. They add a little something extra to an otherwise average performance costume, and they give me a little extra “sparkle” in an audition. I mean…what more could you ask for from your sneak?

You can “Tink” any of your favorite kicks…your pumas, filas, nikes, adidas, whatever! You can even “Tink” your clothes to add a bit of flavor. Our girl Tiff can basically hook up any of your gear or accessories to have you looking fly.

Even though she’s followed her dance dreams to LA, she can still get you “Tinked” wherever you are. You can send her a pair of your favorite sneaks that you already own or have her pick out a brand new pair for you. The price is right, and your new look will be totally worth it!

I know life in Texas is known for being slower than other parts of America, but it looks like everyone else needs to catch up with us on this one. We’re all “Tinked” out down here in Houston, and we’re loving it!

Take the Time to Develop Your Craft....

So...

You think you have what it takes to be the next Alvin Ailey, Michael Jackson, or Picasso?? Do you have a natural talent that causes you to stand out in your industry? If so, then definitely continue to reach for the stars! However, you'll only get so far on natural talent alone. Everyone, and I repeat, EVERYONE must take the time to train and develop their craft to truly become a master at it.

Having a gift or passion to do something is only the first step to mastering it. Taking your talent to the next level requires dedication, discipline, and time. While there are exceptions to every rule, rarely does anyone "make it" by merely being good at something. Even the best of the best had to put in work and pay thier dues before they became the best. For example, Beyonce spent years taking voice lessons before becoming the singing sensation that she is today. Many successful actors still take acting classes and use acting coaches to help them prepare for different roles. And professional dancers who are consistently booking world tours and feature films continue to take classes as well.

So, if you are already great at something, take some time to become even better. If you're a musician, take some formal music classes to learn music notes. If you're a dancer, take a variety of classes to learn the basics of different styles of dance. If you're an artist, take some classes to learn the basics of drawing. Whatever it is you do, take the time to develop your talent. Invest in your craft and in yourself. Trust me. The pay off will be well worth it!!

Live Your Dreams!!

So...

Do you wake up every morning excited to go to work? Do look forward to everyday or to Fridays only? Do you feel like you're using your full potential, or do you feel like you're stuck in a cubicle doing boring and monotonous work?

I'm sure we've all felt stuck in a rut at some point in our lives, but I hope that you don't accept that as the norm. Those feelings should instead spark a need for change because they're a definite indicator that you're not living your dreams. Plenty of people wake up each day full of life and eager to go to work. So, why can't we all live life that way? Why can't we all surpass mediocrity and live a life of greatness? The truth is...we can! Any and everyone can. It's all a matter of choice.

Now, to some people, even the phrase "live your dreams" can be intimidating, but it's very do-able. All you need to do is (1) know yourself, and (2) go with what you know.

When I say "know yourself", I mean know yourself enough to know your likes and dislikes. What are your hobbies? What special skills or talents do you have? What is it that you LOVE to do? Even if your job isn't that bad, what parts of it do you love, and what parts could you do without? Take some time to ask yourself these questions, and use the answers to come up with your dream job.

"Go with what you know" means to follow through with the things you know about yourself. Basically, don't become a flight attendant if you know you hate flying. Once you have an idea of your dream job, take the necessary steps to secure that job. Go to school if you need more training, or become an intern or assistant if you need more experience. If you can't afford to pursue your new found passion full time, then do it on a part-time basis, and stick with it until it becomes full time.

All of this dreaming, soul searching, and change can definitely be scary, but it's more than worth it in the long run. I went to college, and graduated with honors with a degree in psychology. For some reason, I was pursuing a career in the medical field. Fortunately, I discovered early on that that wasn't the best career move for me. Even though I've danced, choreographed, and performed my whole life, it took me a while to realize that a career in entertainment was a better match for me. And although I was already comfortable as a performer, pursuing it as a career was still pretty scary. My career pursuit has been a lot of hard work, full of ups and downs, and very uncertain at times, but I know that I wouldn't want to be doing anything else in the world.

So, my advice to you is to take the time to get to know yourself, and don't be afraid to go after your dreams. Whether you're in the arts, medicine, education, etc, be sure to enjoy the journey and celebrate the small successes, and before you know it, you'll be living your dreams!!
